The War of Independence

During the War of Independence Cork was one of the major centres of the conflict. Many of the most famous figures during that war came from Cork. Ambushes, reprisals, counter-reprisals, curfews, shootings and the notorious behaviour of the Black and Tans marked the period. Perhaps the three best-remembered epsiodes from those times in Cork city are the deaths of the Lord Mayor Tomás McCurtain, Lord Mayor Terence MacSwiney and the burning of Cork city.
