Some of the highlights of Theatre in Cork in 1986 included Translations by Brian Friel and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. Another highlight was The Sunshine Boys with two of Cork's best-known performers, Paddy Comerford and James N. Healy in the lead roles. 1986 also saw the 31st Cork Film Festival take palce in Cork Opera House in September. The highlight of the Christmas season that year was Hans Andersen: A Fairy Tale, which began in the Everyman Playhouse on 26 September, and was based on the life of Hans Christian Andersen in the 1830s. The Christmas pantomime in Cork Opera house that year was Cinderella.
