Theatre in Cork: 1980

1980 saw the start of ET Extra (Everyman Theatre Extra) youth theatre company as well as the Cork Theatre Company (CTC). Cork's Gilbert and Sullivan group ended this year with its farewell performance H.M.S. Pinafore on 24 November in Cork Opera House. Two of the most memorable productions of 1980 included Hess, based on the story of Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy inprisoned for life in Berlin since 1947. The play dealt with a controversial topic which drew much media attention. Another production of interest in 1980 was Jack Doyle, about the well-known boxer from Cobh, Co. Cork, who died in 1978.
