1974 Theatre in Cork

On 29 January 1974 the Cork Opera House hosted the opening performance of the inaugural season of the Cork-based Irish Ballet Company. Throughout that year, Everyman Playhouse hosted a number of different theatre companies. Visiting companies included the London Theatre Company, the Lyric Theatre from Belfast, and Dublin-based Gemini Productions (Evening Echo, 24 August 1974, p. 5). Gemini Productions performed two plays over four weeks in October and November, with a cast featuring distinguished Irish actress Anna Manahan (Evening Echo, 25 October 1974, p. 5).‌

Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Image Thumbnail‌Following on from the production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1973, Noel Pearson presented another Tim Rice and Andrew Llyod Webber musical in Cork during the year with Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This played for two weeks at Cork Opera House from 15 to 27 April. Tony Kenny featured in the tile role while the cast also included comedian and singer Brendan Grace as the narrator, Cahir O'Doherty as Pharoah, Derek Chapman as Jacob and Fran Dempsey in the role of Ruben. Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat returned for a second run at the Opera House from 1 to 6 July, this time with Jim McCann taking the role of the narrator (Evening Echo, 13 & 20 April 1974, p. 5).

Group Theatre Closure Image Thumbnail‌In February 1974, the Cork Shakesparean Company celebrated its golden jubille with a production of Coriolanus at the Opera House. 1974 also saw the closure of the Group Theatre on South Main Street. The theatre's final performance came on 30 May with a show entitled Goodbye Sweet Group, which hosted an evening of music and variety performance featuring some prominent Cork theatre names including Michael and Marie Twomey, Paddy Comerford, Ronnie O'Shaughnessy, David McInerney, Dick Healy, Teresa Griffin, Anne Brennan, Flor Dullea and James N. Healy (Evening Echo, 25 May 1974, p. 5).
